The American Quarter Horse Association, which is based in Amarillo, Texas, is dedicated to the improvement, record-keeping and preservation of the American Quarter Horse. Founded in 1940, this international association sanctions numerous competitive events throughout the year while also maintaining an official registry for the American Quarter Horse. Along with housing the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum, the AQHA also sponsors numerous educational programs with the goal of helping young people better understand the contributions of the American Quarter Horse.

The organization also seeks to assist youth who share a love for the American Quarter Horse by developing and educating professionals for the future. The AQHA Foundation offers assistance that is based on academic merit, financial need, civic activities and equine involvement.
